The leaves are turning red upon the cherry trees and the beech woods are going golden in the clear autumn sun...

Dear All,

The nights are drawing in, the farmer has delivered the logs of ash and the chimney must be swept. The leaves are turning red upon the cherry trees and the beech woods are going golden in the clear autumn sun. We have been hunkered in the studio working on our new tracks - an album is definitely taking shape.

Luke, Jim, Dorie and Mark have all been in to make their contributions and Mike has been shaping the sounds and the structures. The album is called 'Still Hurting in Places' at the moment but that could change. New titles include ‘Stony Ground’ (a global warming, dustbowl romance), ‘Hangover Square’ (a psychedelic tribute to the swinging sixties in rural Britain) and ‘Trouble Comes at Night’ (a US tour lament). We have also adapted the poem ‘Spanish Waters’ by John Masefield. It’s a piratical tale of the Muertos Cays in the Straits of Florida. ‘Water Taxi’ and a song called ‘Last to Know’ from France add a counter point to the English demos.

I have been enjoying a lot of Noel Coward plays on the radio. New to me is 'South Sea Bubble' which is set on an imaginary British island in the Pacific called Samolo and has many resonances after my year in Harbour Island. I have tried to capture some of that feeling in a song called ‘Canefield Burn’. I miss the Bahamas!

Sorry the Kim Richey gigs didn't happen. It would have been great to see her again but I am really looking forward to the dates with Luke and Dorie in December in Portland and Denver. We will be playing some of the new tunes at those gigs as well as older stuff in a new way. It will be great to get back to the States.

With best wishes,
